Today I worked from home. Didn't have much to work on because I get so much done in the office. Did a little bit of writing and reading, which I believe goes with my internship so I'm going to count it as work. After a quiet morning of reading and sitting at my desk writing coffee induced notes, I left the house around noon to go shopping for... a suit! (I'm going to describe my entire day to you because I didn't go into the office and don't have a working camera to take pictures of really anything.) I was originally shopping for a tux for prom, but couldn't decide between two outfits, one a suit and one a tux. Chose the suit in the end because I liked that I could reuse it...we weren't planning on buying anything, just renting, but it only ended up costing a little bit more because I'm charming and got us a discount. (The guy who did the measurements was really nice -- had nothing to do with me.) Having a hard time deciding what shoes to wear, but I guess we'll find out. I thought about wearing my cool boots but Brigitte said I'm not allowed to be taller, which I admit does make a lot of sense. Maybe new black/black vans...Those always look nice. Of course I could go for dress shoes too, but I've always been inspired by David Tennant's look as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who, and he always wears chucks with his suits. Why shouldn't I? So after I got the suit, I got boba and fried chicken when I took my jacket in to get the sleeves extended a bit. The place is right by Tapioca Express on Convoy. Then I rushed from Convoy St. to HTHI because I needed to go to my Eng 101 class. I was 20 minutes late to that because freeways are full of people who don't know how to drive in traffic. (I'd like self driving cars now!) Luckily it was essentially my last day of class and we were just going through some really riveting peer critique sessions. Anyways, here's the pictures I could scrounge up. Enjoy -- or don't.

In work this week, I've spent most of the time logging event calendars. I've done a few things outside of my usual work schedule, though. I participated in setting up the Blazing Laptops Write-a-thon and took part in volunteering/writing on the day of. Sadly, I had to leave in the middle of the write-a-thon because I was feeling all kinds of sick. (I had fun while I was there, though.)
I did some prompt inspired writing while at the event...mostly just fragmented notes and things, I may or may not upload a screenshot of the work. As for self advocating goes, I haven't had to do much of that here. When I'm confused, I ask questions. When I'm not, then I do the work I'm assigned to do. There's a lot of flexibility as far as time scheduling goes, but there's an expectation that specific types of work get done. I haven't had to advocate for much of anything here, so I guess that's a skill I'm not practicing on internship. But since I try to do that as often as I can in other aspects of my life, it's not a skill I find myself lacking. *You guys want a picture, and I want a camera. My camera's broken. :( So take this picture of a grumpy cat stuck in the office. It's sort of how I feel, but I think the cat is a bit more unhappy. Well, it's now the second week of my internship, and I'm enjoying myself so far. The work itself is really boring... I've spent most of my time updating event calendars for advertisement in the Reader, Union Tribune, etc. All of that is an incredibly tedious process, as there are so many events to put into the calendars and you have to do each one individually...every time...once for each website... Very boring. I've also been making sure their website stays updated with all of their upcoming classes. At first it was a bit difficult to manage all the different things on WordPress, but I got the hang of it after twenty minutes or so. While I'm in the office, I'm experiencing mainly tedium. My only real respite has been me being able to listen to music. Luckily, I'm not in the office too often.
In order to fulfill my hourly requirements set by the school, I've signed up for a -ton- of events. These events, along with the work I do from home, are my primary intern duties. Last night I went to the performance of "Upstart Crow, Chapter 2" an experimental 'serial theatre' performance of a fictionalized account of William Shakespeare's 'lost years' that is sponsored by Writers Ink. It was pretty fun, and required no real work from me because they happened to set up before we arrived. (Despite the fact that we arrived an hour and a half early.) I enjoyed the show a lot more than I expected to. Click the image to get to the page: My first week of externship is just about over...and boy, have I had an uneventful week! Through my brief meeting with Kristen, my mentor, and some light research of Writer's Ink's website, I learned that Writer's Ink is a nonprofit organization with the goal of making writing more accessible for everybody. Because I am one of... I think, four interns...my general workload is pretty light. In general, there aren't any real skills I need to develop in order to be successful with my internship. I know I'll be working on some wordpress stuff, which I've never had to do before, but something tells me that will be simple busy work. I'm only going to actually be in the office (accompanied by someone) on Monday and Tuesdays, as any work that is expected of me can be done from home. So a site visit on Monday or Tuesday next week would be optimal. As for the month ahead... I think most of my hours will consist of events. I would like to write and take some classes, but I'll just have to see how that goes. Writing is easy. Writing consistently is not. Anyways... here's a picture of the 'work' I'm currently working on. Glenwark was something I started writing late last year, though planning went into it at the beginning of my junior year. To sort've reboot my progress on the story, I've read what I originally wrote and am now writing (or revamping) the ideas to conform to how my style has developed over the last year. It'll be interesting to see how this goes, and if I can find a way to take a picture (thanks, broken phone camera), I'll upload some of my current notes as well as some notes I've had for a couple years.
I'm working with a bit of a cliche character right now. The whole "everyone I loved died" type thing is a bit overused, but I'm looking forward to adding some kind of twist to that. I'd like to imagine Winston's father is still alive, for example. He will be of importance later. As for Winston himself, I'm going to have to try pretty hard to keep from making him the typical 'vengeance' archetype. One thing I know is that he's a cat burglar (because he's poor and needs to survive, despite his aristocratic background). He does eventually run into people who help him. Questions I'm trying to answer for myself are whether or not these people are loyal, if they're 'good' morally, or 'good' lawfully. Just going to keep taking notes and messing around with the characters until I decide what I like. Today will be the last time I attend school for a month because I'm going to be spending all of my time at Writer's Ink instead. During my time there, I'll probably be doing administrative work or hosting social media (because social media is something young people are supposed to be masters of). I'm pretty excited for the opportunity to work with such talented writers as my mentor Kristen Fogel, and whoever else I happen to meet. I'm hoping to develop my world building skills during this month, so I'm looking forward to seeing what programs Writer's Ink hosts that I'll be able to attend. I haven't discussed with Kristen about my personal project because it's something I'm hoping to do mainly on my free time, so she hasn't had the opportunity to give me any feedback on it. I'm pretty nervous that I'll leave Writer's Ink feeling unrewarded, but I find it difficult to believe that I will -- just being cynical.
